Tsvika Kleinman | WSC Sports | How Do You Build a Product for Sports Fans?
Host: Eyal David · Guest: Tsvika Kleinman · About the host
Tsvika Kleinman is Director of Product at WSC Sports, whose AI system breaks live sports broadcasts into edited clips with metadata for more than 450 sports organizations such as the NBA, ESPN and LaLiga. In his view, you build a product for sports fans by recognizing that viewing is moving from the full game to recaps, players and vertical content, and through personalized experiences built from the video's metadata and the fan's engagement. Each sport has a dedicated PM who owns its content-creation rules.
In this episode
- The word "manager" in product manager is badly underrated: beyond managing stakeholders and processes, a good product manager manages themselves, their focus, and above all what not to do.
- WSC Sports breaks every game into 400-500 edited clips with metadata and an importance ranking from 1 to 5. These are the building blocks that let customers define hundreds or thousands of automatic content-creation rules.
- Sports consumption is changing: fewer full games, more recaps, content around the game and players as the story, and above all short vertical content that younger fans expect on the platforms where they already are.
- Product work at WSC runs in stages: exploration (is there a need and someone who will pay), discovery (did we crack the experience and scope), then execution with design partners from the customer base before scaling.
- For breaking into product in Israel: start in an adjacent role such as QA, project management, operations or engineering, at an organization that excites you, and actually do product work to build a track record.
- It's easier to move from a customer-centric B2C mindset into B2B than the other way around, because thinking about the persona and the what's-in-it-for-me translates well to a business customer too.

Questions & answers
What does WSC Sports do?
WSC Sports builds an AI-based system that analyzes live sports broadcasts in real time (visual and audio analysis cross-referenced with statistical data), breaks them into edited clips with metadata, and lets sports and media organizations produce and distribute personalized content to fans on every platform.
Who is Tsvika Kleinman?
Tsvika Kleinman is Director of Product at WSC Sports, where he leads, among others, the Growth group and the group of sport-specific PMs. Before that he was VP Product at Avo, and worked in consulting, business development and product management at companies such as Paragonix.
What does Tsvika look for in product managers?
Soft skills and leadership, analytical and methodological thinking for prioritizing by impact, stakeholder management and communication, the potential to move into new territories, and above all self-management and strong self-motivation.
How do you get into product management without experience?
According to Tsvika, Israeli companies rarely hire junior product people, so it's worth joining an organization you care about in an adjacent role such as QA, project management, operations or engineering, connecting with the product managers, bringing initiatives and doing product projects to grow from within.
Why did Avo shut down, according to Tsvika?
In his view, the company invested most of its resources in a fully proprietary logistics operation and less in customer experience. Over 50% of new users didn't even add an item to the cart despite free credit, and the company shut down when the market shifted to healthy growth while it was still burning money.
