Eilon Reshef | Gong | How Do You Build a Product for Sales Organizations
Host: Eyal David · Guest: Eilon Reshef · About the host
Eilon Reshef, co-founder and CPO of Gong, explains how to build an AI product for sales organizations: sell to whoever owns the money (the CRO), show customers real AI output very early, long before the UI, and measure generative models with an Elo rating borrowed from chess. In his view, a product manager's number-one skill is sitting with the customer and understanding what they need and why, and a product organization should train every PM and designer to work hands-on with GenAI.

- A product manager's number-one skill at Gong: sit with the customer, look them in the eye and understand what they need, why, and what they'll get from it, not just what they ask for. Otherwise you become a paper shuffler.
- Sell to whoever owns the money: Gong tried selling to Revenue Operations, and even Eilon's brother wouldn't buy. Once they moved to the CRO and talked about close rates, quota attainment and faster onboarding, selling became much easier.
- With AI products, show customers the output, not the UI: Gong sends customers real summaries and even spreadsheets very early, and runs 300-400 betas in parallel behind feature flags.
- Measure GenAI with an Elo rating: when two answers are both correct, people pick the better one, and each model gains or loses points as in chess. That yields a number that quantifies improvement between versions.
- An AI-first product organization: a dedicated AI group that both ships its own features and supports other groups, with one clear driver per shared feature. And every PM and designer did a GenAI exercise so they aren't afraid to run a first evaluation themselves.
- To bring AI into an organization, start small: a simple use case, a GPT wrapper, and see how customers react. "The appetite comes with eating," and customers can't imagine the possibilities until they see something.

Episode Description
Gong, founded in 2015 by Amit Bendov and Eilon Reshef, uses AI to analyze all communication between salespeople and customers, and today sells three products: conversation intelligence, forecast and sales engagement. In conversation with Eyal David, Eilon explains why they stopped selling to Revenue Operations (even his brother wouldn't buy) and moved to the CRO, how the company values were written from employees' post-it notes, how as CPO he splits his time between managing 80 product people and high-ambiguity features, and how they compete with Microsoft and Salesforce. He describes a product organization built around a dedicated AI group with a single driver per feature, the GenAI exercise every PM and designer completed, their evaluation method using Elo ratings, the 300-400 betas running in parallel, and candidly admits Gong hasn't yet cracked onboarding junior product managers.

Questions & answers
What does Gong do?
Gong is a revenue intelligence platform for sales organizations that sits on top of the CRM. It records and analyzes, with AI, the calls, emails and messages between salespeople and customers, and sells three products: conversation intelligence, forecast and sales engagement (Engage).
Who is Eilon Reshef?
Eilon Reshef is a co-founder of Gong, together with Amit Bendov, and the company's CPO. At first he led product and engineering and even wrote POC code; when the engineering organization grew to hundreds of people a head of R&D joined and Eilon focused on product. He runs a product organization of about 80 people.
How does Gong measure the quality of GenAI features?
Where precision, recall or accuracy apply, they build tests with human labeling. For GenAI, where several answers can be correct, they compare old versus new and use an Elo rating from chess: people choose the better answer, and the winning model gains points. A feature with accuracy that's too low, for example 50% at identifying the decision maker, isn't released.
What is the most important skill for a product manager, according to Eilon Reshef?
The ability to sit with the customer and understand exactly what they need, why they need it and what they'll get from it, not just what they want. Next come building the product well and communicating it outward, including to the sales team.
How would Eilon recommend starting to bring AI into an organization?
Start small: pick the simplest GenAI use case, even a GPT wrapper, put it in front of customers and see how they react, then iterate. Internally, give every product manager and designer a hands-on GenAI exercise so they gain the confidence to work with it themselves.
