A short Takhles cut from the full conversation with Nicole Priel of Kinetic Capital: why B2C, and why now. Nicole explains why consumer is an overlooked opportunity, why it's squarely a venture play, and why the third technological shift we're on the cusp of is reopening the big opportunity in consumer.
In this episode
- B2C is a screaming opportunity, "a diamond in the rough", that people are simply overlooking.
- B2C is squarely a venture play: low capital requirements, high scalability and fast time to money.
- With a consumer product you can put it out there and have paying customers within weeks, unlike other areas that drew investment in recent years.
- Some of the biggest venture-backed outcomes have been consumer businesses: mobile gave us Waze, Candy Crush, DoorDash and Instagram, and the internet gave us Google.
- In Nicole's view we are on the cusp of the third technological shift, which is why now is the time to build consumer products.
Why did you choose B2C?
Eyal David: [00:00] So, Takhles: why is now the time for B2C products? Here's a short clip from the full episode with Nicole Priel.
Eyal David: [00:09] But you went ahead and focused on, you know, the B2C, the most reality thing, I guess, like a decade ago. Can you tell us more about it? Why have you chosen that?
A diamond in the rough: low capital, scale and fast time to money
Nicole Priel: [00:18] Absolutely. So no hate for anyone else. There's enough love for all industries, but B2C seems like a screaming opportunity, like a diamond in the rough, that people are overlooking, and it seems just totally crazy to me that there's an opportunity that big that's simply overlooked. So the way we think about it is that there's basically three pillars that are supporting this thesis. One is that consumer is squarely a venture play. So there's low capital requirements for consumer businesses. They're highly scalable and there's fast time to money, right? So you can put a product out there, and within weeks you can have paying customers. It's very different from certain other areas that have seen investments in recent years. At the same time, some of the biggest venture backed outcomes have been consumer businesses. Going back, if you think about the mobile generation, that gave us Waze and Candy Crush and DoorDash and Instagram, and then the revolution before that, the internet revolution gave us Google. And a whole host of other businesses that are just ubiquitous today. Today we're on the cusp of the third generation of the last, the third, sorry, technological shift.
