Transcript: Why I Talk Less About Product Now | Coffee with Eyal

Host: Eyal David · Back to episode

· Updated:

"Coffee with Eyal" is a short, informal series in which Eyal David opens the mic over a cup of coffee and shares insights, things he is building and what is on his mind. In the first episode, released on October 7th, 2026, three years after he started the podcast in the wake of October 7th, 2023, he answers a question many listeners ask: why the show no longer focuses mainly on product management. He explains that roles are being rewritten and product management playbooks are changing, that the best-performing episodes this year were about careers, entrepreneurship, practical AI, breaking into new markets and mental resilience, that he discovered how much he enjoys interviewing entrepreneurs (in the "Business from the Inside" series and with guests like Peter Paltchik and Alex Rif), and that the audience now includes entrepreneurs, marketers, CEOs and investors. The focus from here on: AI, career, entrepreneurship and business, with product all around it, including ourselves as a product. He talks about investing in video and social, asks listeners to share the show, and closes with a call to anyone who wants to start a business or go independent: start experimenting and building.

In this episode

  • Product management is going through a deep change: roles are being rewritten, and the playbooks and methods that used to occupy the field matter much less now, so a podcast that keeps talking only about them feels wrong.
  • The best-performing episodes this year were about careers, building businesses and entrepreneurship, practical AI, breaking into new markets and mental resilience, a sign that listeners want more than classic product management.
  • "In the end we're also a product": career, a personal path and reinventing yourself are part of the same product thinking.
  • The audience has grown: alongside product people, the listeners now include entrepreneurs, marketers, CEOs, investors and people outside tech, so the language is changing too, with less English.
  • The way to start a business or go independent probably begins with experimenting and building things, and side projects have never been easier or more common.

What Coffee with Eyal is

Eyal David: [00:09] Hi, welcome to Coffee with Eyal. I'm actually drinking coffee here, by the way, that's the thing, that's the format. I open the mic while I'm drinking coffee, so maybe you'll hear me take a sip now and then, but feel free to do the same, drink and listen and give me feedback,

Eyal David: [00:30] and I hope you enjoy it. So this is basically the place in this series, let's call it that, where I share insights, things that come up for me, things that are on my mind, maybe insights across different episodes and different guests that I connect together, maybe I'll talk about the things I'm building, businesses I'm starting, and in general, really, like, updates and what's on my mind. So today I chose to talk about something I've been meaning to bring up for a long time, and somehow it never happened.

Why don't we talk about product management anymore?

Eyal David: [01:05] What's going on with this podcast? Why don't we talk about product management here anymore? What's the story with the name? And suddenly you're interviewing other people who aren't necessarily product builders, but are interesting.

Eyal David: [01:13] So it's funny, I think today, it's a bit symbolic, today is October 7th, 2026, and I started the podcast right after October 7th, 2023, when I was basically looking for a reason to get me off the couch […], and to do good in the world, so I found the need to talk about my world, about product management, and to expose as many people as possible to methodologies and to smart people, and how you build better products in different industries. And I think the change breaks down into three things.

The world changed: product management is being rewritten

Eyal David: [01:54] The most significant thing is, I think the world has changed, roles are being rewritten from scratch, I think product management is a role that's really going through a change, and things that used to occupy us, as you probably understand, occupy us much less now, and all those playbooks, all those methods are being rewritten, so it doesn't feel right to me.

The episodes that worked best this year

Eyal David: [02:17] Second thing, I think maybe you can also see proof of it in the episodes that worked better this year, that episodes about careers, episodes about building businesses and entrepreneurship and really what you actually do with AI, and how you break into a new market, and even episodes about mental resilience and even the zone of genius, right? Those are episodes that worked really well, or how to manage in the new world. I understand that career and a personal path and reinventing yourself, because in the end we're also a product, right? And building businesses, these are things that really interest me and you, so I think it stands on two legs,

I discovered I love interviewing entrepreneurs

Eyal David: [02:57] the market changed, and I basically changed too. By the way, I discovered that I'm really interested in interviewing, and I really enjoy interviewing, and not necessarily only product managers or product people, so I suddenly find myself interviewing a lot of entrepreneurs, and in general, honestly, people who built a business with their own hands, and in the "Business from the Inside" series, these ventures are so interesting, and in general, honestly, all kinds of people, Peter Paltchik came on to talk about mental resilience, and Alex Rif came to talk about social entrepreneurship, so I'm discovering that I really enjoy interviewing, so maybe that's the second thing.

The audience grew beyond product people

Eyal David: [03:27] And the third thing I think about is that the audience here has grown, we're basically not only product managers here anymore, there are a lot of entrepreneurs here, marketers, CEOs of companies, investors, and in general, I see people from outside tech, so I'm also trying to adapt the content and also adapt the language, so if you hear less English here, at least I'll really try.

What we'll talk about from now on

Eyal David: [03:54] So what you can basically expect here, as you've seen, is interesting guests, trying to get to the practical stuff with them, seeing what we can actually take from them, trying to understand what worked for them, and basically adopting it for ourselves. And I'm working from the idea that the topics I talk about will mainly be around AI, AI, career, entrepreneurship, business, and of course product all around it, product is basically the businesses, the products we build, and also ourselves as a product at the end of the day.

Video, social and a small request

Eyal David: [04:31] So that's about that. We're also really trying to invest now to basically grow and reach as many people as possible, to bring as much value as possible to listeners, so we've basically added video and there's also social, so I really, really, really, really want you to experience the podcast, this show, in the best and most fun way possible, and feel free to give me feedback, and we'll improve. And I'll also ask you, if you could share the podcast with a friend, with an episode you liked, it would make my day, maybe not today because today is October 7th, but tomorrow, for sure. And it will really help us, and I'll really appreciate it.

A closing thought: start building

Eyal David: [05:15] Beyond that, if I can leave you with some thought, I'll put aside for a second what you do at work today, and I'll actually focus on your path in general. It's clear to me that we're Israelis, and we're all building today, and of course it's much easier to build, like I said, and side projects are flourishing, and a lot of people reach out to me about it, and I find myself doing a ton of them. If you're not doing it, and you want to start a business, and you want to go independent, and you still don't know how to do it, but the way there is probably to start experimenting and building things, then I really hope this podcast brings you value, gives you inspiration, and moves you to act,

Eyal David: [06:05] and feel free to reach out to me and ask for any topic, and I'll try to cover it and bring value there, and it's really important to me, like, really important to me that with all of this, people getting laid off and things happening, and maybe we in high-tech feel it more, I want to support the wave of entrepreneurship rising as a result, and I really want to help. So really, feel free, and I really, really, really want us to bring value there.

Eyal David: [06:29] So in short, let's have a day, a complicated day for sure, but let's have a day, each of us in our own way, and may it go as well as it possibly can, and I hope the rest of your week, the rest of your month, will be great, and see you in the next episode.
